# WordPress development for shops and agencies

I build custom WordPress themes and plugins that your team can edit and your next
developer can read. You own the domain, the hosting, and the code.

Services

## What I build.

WordPress is my specialty. Pick the page that matches what you need.

### Custom WordPress themes

Block-based themes for shops, inns, tours, and real estate agents. Your team edits
pages in wp-admin, with no page builder. [Read about theme development](https://matthummel.com/services/custom-wordpress-themes/).

### Plugin development

Small, documented plugins for when WordPress can’t do what you need out of the box.
[Read about plugin development](https://matthummel.com/services/wordpress-plugin-development/).

### Agency overflow

White-label WordPress help when your team is at capacity. You keep the client, and
I work in the background. [Read how overflow works](https://matthummel.com/wordpress-agency-overflow/).

I also clean up sites that got messy, build WooCommerce themes, and do full-stack
work like APIs and React front ends when a theme alone is not enough.

Process

## How a project runs.

The same four steps every time, whether you are a shop or an agency.

### Written scope

A short document that says what is in, what is out, and what done means. No long
proposal.

### Staged previews

I build in stages and share a preview at each one. You give feedback, and I keep
going until we meet the agreed outcome.

### Editable handoff

Pages use standard WordPress blocks, so editing works like any other WordPress site.
I explain anything that works differently in plain English before handoff.

### You own it

The domain, hosting, database, and code are yours. I run [the handoff checklist](https://matthummel.com/wordpress-handoff-checklist/)
with you on the last call.

A simple site usually takes two to three weeks. Custom fields or online booking
can push it to four to eight. You get a realistic estimate when we scope the project.

Agencies

## Working with agencies.

When your team hits capacity, I can work in the background as a white-label WordPress
developer. You keep the client relationship, and I talk to your team, not the end
client.

Scope is written first, previews are staged, and the handoff is editable. An NDA
is available when you need one, and pricing is per project.

Work

## Work you can open.

These are sample sites I built in public. Open the demo, then read the story behind
it. My contract work is under NDA, so those clients stay private.

## Read before you write.

Short reads that explain how I work.

### New to owning a website?

Where a site lives, why you should own every account, and what a staging site is
for. [Read website basics](https://matthummel.com/website-basics-for-new-developers-and-business-owners/).

### Running an agency?

Questions

## Common questions.

Should I start with a theme or a plugin?

How the site looks and is laid out belongs in the theme. Anything the site must
keep after a redesign, like custom content types or an integration, belongs in a
plugin.

Can you take over a site someone else built?

Yes. Cleaning up sites that got messy is part of the work. The [handoff checklist](https://matthummel.com/wordpress-handoff-checklist/)
is the list of questions I ask first.

Do you work with agencies?

Yes. I’m happy to stay in the background on agency work. Pricing is per project,
so send me a note about what you need.

What does “you own it” mean?

The domain, hosting, database, and code are all yours. After handoff, I don’t have
access unless you invite me back. Any developer can pick up where I left off.
